Queensland Unions are seeking expressions of interest in a new group: Queensland Unions for Refugees.
Queensland Unions for Refugees seeks to bring activists from across the union movement together to advocate , lobby and fight for a better understanding of refugees in the community and more humane refugee policy from political parties.
Queensland Unions for Refugees seeks to counter false and vitriolic portrayals of refugees by the mainstream media and the current federal government in order to promote the core values of unionism; peace, equality and fairness. It also seeks to counter the anti-refugee racism stoked by the current federal government in order to mask and distract during the implementation of their own anti-worker agenda.
Queensland unions have a proud history of promoting internationalism and race equality; opposing Australian government involvement in unjust conflicts; and acting to protect trade unionists and others persecuted by dictatorial and repressive regimes.
Many unions, and the ACTU, have already adopted pro-refugee resolutions and been a committed part of the campaign for humanitarian refugee policies. The challenge now is to empower and mobilise rank and file members to actively implement those policies as part of the pro-refugee movement.
