The National Welfare March will take place in Brisbane at 11am this Sunday 12 July at Queens Park, Brisbane to highlight this governments continual push to take the most from those who can least afford it.
We are demanding an increase in Newstart payments and other associated benefits (pension, disability allowance, etc) to a level above the poverty line.
This policy change alone will allow Welfare Recipients to live with dignity, free of the stress imposed by a punitive system which treats the needy as criminals.
The government will tell us that such an increase in welfare payments would be “unsustainable” but we all know that there are many areas of corporate welfare which could and should be wound back.
Successive governments in Australia have failed to maintain indexation of welfare payments to allow for cost-of-living increases caused by ongoing inflation.
We are now in a situation where there is a huge disparity between the amount needed to meet basic living requirements and the relative pittance grudgingly allocated to those among us who are most in need.
Handing out huge tax breaks to mining companies and allowing the wealthy to minimise their tax contribution to our nation are just two of many shameful imbalances in the way our national wealth is shared.
There are innumerable ways in which our society can improve the treatment we dish out to those among us most in need of help and support.
Social Equity is regarded as the cornerstone of a healthy society – basic human dignity, sustained by fair access to livelihood, education and resources. These are Human Rights!
We ask that you help us spread the word about the National Welfare March.
We all have welfare recipients among our friends and loved ones.
Together, let's make this effort to support them and improve their lives.
