Queensland union movement mourns Tiga Bayles

The Queensland Council of Unions and the Queensland union movement mourns the loss of Tiga Bayles, a staunch advocate, activist and warrior for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander industrial and civil rights.

QCU General Secretary Ros McLennan said “today is a sad day for Queensland, a day we have lost one of the giants of the Indigenous rights movement in Queensland.”

“Tiga contributed much to our State, particularly as a staunch and ongoing leader in the Stolen Wages campaign.  Tiga was there from the start to the very end.

“Without Tiga's tireless efforts and his ongoing commitment to Elders, workers and community - especially via 98.9FM - we would have seen a very different result for those who had their wages stolen by previous state governments.

“The QCU and the Queensland union movement have much to commemorate in working with
Tiga and on behalf of the Queensland trade union movement we send our condolences to his family and community.”
